Families are faced with
decisions and choices every day. Decisions about time, money, food rearing
children, health, home maintenance, and aging parents. Therefore, families
need reliable consumer information. The Person County Cooperative Extension
Service can help, and we are just a phone call away.
The Family and Consumer Science Program in Person County focuses on
building strong, healthy families. Programs are also offered to help families
foster resilience while faced with transition and promote safe and healthy
environments.
The primary focus area for our program is to build healthy families by
helping families improve the quality of their lives through eating healthy,
being active, handling food safely, managing resources for food security
and practicing health promoting behaviors.
Specific programs offered towards accomplishing this objective include:
Color Me Healthy
Give Your Heart a Healthy Beat!
In Home Breast Feeding Support Program
Partners in Wellness
Sybershop
Aging with Gusto!
Community presentations are available for church and civic groups on
related topics such as Women Living Healthy, Women Living Well, Dietary
Guidelines, the Food Guide Pyramid and Food Safety Topics.
In addition to articles in the Person County Cooperative Extension newsletter, two
other newsletters are distributed to interested families through the FCS
department. “Growing Together”, a newsletter designed to strengthen
parenting skills is distributed monthly to parents of preschoolers through
direct mail and the local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency to home
day cares and Child Care Centers . “Money Talks”, a newsletter
devoted to consumer and basic financial management principles is distributed
through direct mail and area worksites.
Other programs related to family and personal well being are promoted
through the FCS Department and based on community needs.
